The geography department at Morton Academy allows students to become informed global citizens by teaching a high-quality geography education inspiring in students’ curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching equips students with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources, natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As students’ progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

Students follow a varied curriculum at KS3 (see attached curriculum map) to prepare them for GCSE geography at KS4. At GCSE they study the AQA specification.

The Geography Curriculum has the ultimate goal of producing informed global citizens. The geography curriculum is unique to the Academy and designed for the students of the Academy. This said, it is linked to the National Curriculum, the UL Curriculum & the GCSE programme of study. The geography taught at Morton has been created to give students a wanderlust and to promote inquisitiveness based on analysing information objectively. The lessons are current and evolve based on new research and global events. In addition to this the KS3 & KS4 SoW dovetail which allows progression for each student in the Academy.

The development of cultural capital is an integral part of the geography curriculum at Morton Academy. We ensure that our students develop the essential knowledge to become informed global citizens. Through careful planning and teaching we ensure this is framed in the local, national, and global context. We encourage students to explore social, economic, political and environmental issues across this range of scales, ensuring that students have access to the best geographical thinking to support this.

Careers education is an important part of the geography curriculum. In Key Stage 3, all students complete the topic “World of Work” which explores the world of work and the changing employment structures in the UK. In Key Stages 4 and we explore wider-ranging economic ideas such as globalisation and multi-national organisations and the role that they play in changing the UK labour market. We also focus on key employability skills such as analysis, presentation of information & data and decision-making. Furthermore, we explore jobs that are directly related to geography and have links with The Environment agency, Cumbria County Council and Sellafield.
