This qualification is aimed at a range of learners who wish to be introduced to childcare and development for children aged 0-5 years. It provides the opportunity to gain a vocational qualification that gives a basic introduction to the sector. It includes the knowledge and understanding of child development and well-being necessary when preparing for working with children in a variety of settings. It also gives learners an insight into their preferred learning styles and assists in developing their ability to study. This qualification will enable learners to develop significant transferable knowledge and study skills that will support progression including:

• an awareness of learning styles
• a basic introduction in to working with children in a variety of settings
• an understanding of roles and responsibilities when working in a setting
• an understanding of Equality and Diversity within a childcare setting
• a basic understanding of the stages and sequence of child development
• an introduction to observing children and how it supports development
• an introduction to the influences that affect holistic development
• an introduction to everyday care routines and the types of activities that can support the development of independence an introduction to supporting children through transition

Students follow the CACHE Level 2 Technical Award.

The Child Development course helps prepare students so that they become knowledgeable and considerate adults who have the ability, both in the world of work and in their personal lives to nurture babies and toddlers through their first steps of life. Throughout this course students are able to develop their technological and research skills which enhances their use of ICT and prepares them for the possibility of higher education or university. Students are given opportunities to develop their thoughts and ideas through discussion and debate as well as broaden their understanding of theories of child development that have developed over time. Some challenging texts and concepts are explored through accessible and relatable links ensuring students become confident learners and show a deep understanding of child development through practical application and completion of high quality coursework.

The development of Cultural Capital is carefully considered in the delivery of the Child Development course. Students have the opportunity to learn beyond the course requirements to investigate psychological, behavioural and educational theories of child development ranging from Freud and Piaget to Erickson and Bandura. Students are encouraged to explore the opportunities for young children in their local area as well as comparative experiences in other contexts and countries. Student are able to identify external and personal factors that effect holistic development and develop a clear view of the social, economic, and environmental issues that impact on the crucial 0-5 years of development. A large part of the course is underpinned by the careful delivery of the importance of Equality and Diversity within Early Years and the legislation that underpins it such as the Equality Act 2010 and the Children’s Act 2004.

Studying child development can help you on your way to a career in the caring professions; child care, social work, paediatric care, midwifery, early learning and primary school services. Clear links are made throughout the course to ensure students can identify the opportunities locally, nationally and internationally and understand the value of the skills and qualities required to work with young children.
